Weekly Times | MARYBOROUGH president Terry Hillier says the Magpies are not worried about their on-field performance despite a brutal round of football on Saturday.
In wet conditions, the Bendigo league club was outclassed by flag hopeful Golden Square by 238 points. It was the biggest loss in country Victorian football last weekend, with former North Melbourne player Corey Jones having a day out, slotting 16 goals for Golden Square.
“They blew us out of the water in the first quarter, but we never stopped trying,” Hillier said.
It was a dark day for the Magpies, who also forfeited their reserves match against the Bulldogs.
Maryborough is currently hunting for a senior coach for next season, and the club has been fielding expressions of interest since June. Three candidates are in the running for the job, but Hillier said current coach Jamie Bond was not one of them.
Bond, who led the Magpies to five wins last season, said it was always going tough for them to match it with some other clubs with the resources they had on hand, regardless of who was in charge.
“The club has battled for the last few years,” Bond said.
“The hard thing for the club to find is the resources to compete for players — we just don’t have them.”
Hillier was not concerned by the on-field carnage the club sustained on Saturday.
“Our priorities are making sure we’ve got a good strategic plan in place ... and finding a new coach,” he said.
Fellow Bendigo league side Kyneton suffered a heavy 83-point loss to top-of-table Strathfieldsaye, following the removal of senior coach Mark Adamson last week.
Luke Beattie, a Kyneton player, has been installed as caretaker coach.
