Weekly Times |WITH two wins separating all finalists in the Murray, Nepean and North Central leagues, it’s anyone’s guess which club will hoist a premiership cup this season.
The Murray league, which has unearthed five individual premiers in the past five seasons, may once again throw up a finals curveball.
“Given how close it’s been, we’re in for an enthralling finals series,” Murray league general manager Dale Norman said.
The competition’s top six is brimming with potential premiership fairytales.
Minor premier Mulwala is out to break its 25-year premiership drought, having earned the right to play Nathalia — winner of five premierships in the past decade — in 10 days for automatic entry into the grand final.
Tongala, which plays Barooga in one of two elimination finals this weekend, has not won a premiership since going back-to-back in the Goulburn Valley league in 1983-84. It shifted to the Murray league in 2006.
Norman said it was great for clubs like Mulwala and Tongala to be in the mix to “break their duck”.
The absence of Wedderburn, which has won the past four North Central league premierships, in this season’s top four leaves the door ajar for St Arnaud, Charlton, Birchip-Watchem and Donald to snatch the silverware.
In the Nepean league, Red Hill snuck into the top five at the expense of Rye on percentage at the weekend, to join Rosebud, Sorrento, Somerville and Hastings in the finals.
