Weekly Times | AFL Yarra Ranges commission chair Tony Mitchell says there’s no shortage of quality applicants for a new region general manager.
Gordon Sumner has vacated the role after 16 months in order to pursue another employment opportunity.
Expressions of interest for Sumner’s role were taken until Friday last week, and Mitchell said the quality of the applicants was “mind boggling”.
“There are some really good quality candidates, and I’m really pleased with who’s applied,” he said.
“We make sure we do our homework, and give everyone an opportunity.
Mitchell said the number of applicants had exceeded expectations, and he believed AFL Victoria’s structural transformation had made the opportunity more attractive to professionals.
“People want to get into country footy with the changes we’ve made over the past couple of years, which is very positive,” Mitchell said. “That’s clearly been recognised, we’re now an industry of preference in sport.”
Sumner will stay until the end of the season.
