Riddell FLWeekly Times | AFL Victoria has approved Kilmore Football Club’s move to the Northern Football League next season.

The Blues will make the switch from the Riddell District league to Division 3 of the metropolitan competition after the community football body gave them the green light.

Their application to join the Northern league was unanimously supported by its clubs, but they were left in limbo when the Riddell District clubs voted against the move, leaving it to AFL Victoria to decide whether to grant the clearance.

Kilmore club president David Milne said he was informed of AFL Victoria’s decision about 5pm last night, and the news was later passed on at training.

He hoped the move would have a “positive impact” on the club.

“It feels very good. Everybody’s excited about a new challenge and we’ll see how we go,” he said.

“We were sort of on the road to nowhere before and now there’s a bit of vision and everybody seems to be pretty happy with it.”

In a statement, the Riddell District league said it respected the decision and wished the Kilmore club the best for the future.

“Whilst disappointed to lose a club that has had 66 years of history in the RDFNL, the league hopes that this move rejuvenates the Kilmore FNC and that the club is successful and prosperous long into the future.”

The Riddell District league will be a 12 team competition next season and details of the fixture will be released at the annual general meeting on December 2.

Milne thanked senior coach Travis McCarty — who is continuing with the club next year — vice presidents Paul Maher and Jamie Archer, and secretary Kristy Stanton for their efforts with the proposal.
