port fairyWeekly Times | PORT Fairy Football Club’s points cap under AFL Victoria’s new player points policy has reduced from 52 to 50 on the eve of the Hampden Football League season.

AFL Western District general manager Lachy Patterson said he approached Port Fairy about reducing its player points limit after recently ratifying the Seagulls players’ points values.

Senior community football players this year — except those in the Picola and District league, which did not adopt the policy — are allocated a points value based on their playing history under the policy.

The number of points that can be used in a fielded side is capped. The overarching aims of the policy include promoting player retention, junior promotion and competitive competitions.

Port Fairy was given a 52-point cap after successfully applying to the AFL Victoria committee overseeing the policy’s application to exceed the statewide limit of 50 points which clubs could be allocated.

The lowest points cap in the Hampden league this season is 40 points.

Patterson said Port Fairy’s submission was based on factors including the town’s transient population, location, and results during last year’s testing phase — he said the points allocated to its elimination final team last year added up to the high-50s.

No club in Victoria has a points cap set above 50 points as a result of the change.
