hfl1Weekly Times | HAMILTON Kangaroos was declared the winner of a thrilling Hampden league Anzac Day match after a last-second goal was disallowed because the final siren was not heard.

The Kangaroos fought back from 37 points down at three-quarter time to hit the front by two points late in the final term.

In the dying seconds a Portland player kicked a goal, which would have given the Tigers a four-point victory, but the goal was retracted when it was deemed the siren had sounded, unheard by the central umpires, before the ball was kicked. The final score was 11.13 (79) to 11.11 (77).

“I believe the right thing happened, but I’m with the Hamilton Kangaroos of course,” club chairman John Pepper said.

Portland club president Michael Carr said the club would review video footage of the match at training last night. “We’ve accepted the umpires’ decision on the day,” he said. “We’ve made no decision about whether we’ll challenge it or not.”

Hampden league president Hugh Worrall, who was at the match, said the siren was heard by officials and boundary umpires, who notified the central umpires. When asked whether the goal could be disallowed as the umpires had not called an end to the game, Worrall said “that’s what happened, and that’s what the result was at the end of the game”.
