oandmWeekly Times | ALBURY playing co-coach Daniel Maher will trade footy boots for dancing shoes this Friday night.

Maher is one of many famous faces from the border region who will perform in the annual Stars of the Border Dance for Cancer.

Raising awareness in the fight for cancer is an area close to home for Maher and the Albury Football Club.

“In this day and age everyone is affected by cancer itself and I’m no different,” Maher said.

“If I can use my profile within the footy club and the community of Albury-Wodonga and raise some money, I’m happy to help.”

Maher’s initial goal to raise about $2500 has been blown away — he had already raised $3670 for the Cancer Council at the time of writing.

With the overwhelming support he’s received so far, Maher said he would love to see the original target doubled.

“I’d love to get to $4000, I’d really love to get $5000,” he said.

“I’m thankful to the community and also friends and family that have chipped in all over Australia. I’ve been lucky enough that people have been generous enough to donate.”

Maher will join forces with dance partner Hayley Galvin to put on a jazz contemporary showpiece on the night.

However when posed the question if the dancing has helped his footy the Tiger admitted to being pessimistic about his fancy footwork.

“I can’t dance, so I’m not sure,” he joked.

“It’s definitely out of my comfort zone, but it’s been a good little outlet (from footy).”

The Ovens and Murray interleague squad was announced last week and the strength of the Albury side was reflected with eight Tigers players named, including former Melbourne and Western Bulldogs veteran Daniel Cross.
