Alberton FLWeekly Times | NOT everyone can win a premiership — and for some an ordinary win will produce the biggest smiles.

Hats off to Stony Creek under-18s, who won their first game on Saturday since July 2014 thanks to a goal in the dying seconds against Toora.

The Lions had scored a total of two behinds from their first four games this season, but fought back into the Round 6 match after being 17 points down at three-quarter time.

Hayden Funnell kicked what his coach Andrew Logan described as a “mongrel of a ball that floated over everyone” to goal with four seconds to go.

“The rest is history and the boys went absolutely berserk,” Logan said.

He described the match as “like a grand final” and the players were so excited “none of the boys heard the siren because they were just celebrating that much”.

“This is my first year coaching these boys, so for me seeing them improve every week coming up against good quality teams, the stuff we’ve done in the preseason and what we’re doing at training each week, it’s just paying off,” Logan said.

Also congratulations to Smythesdale, which won its second match of the Central Highlands league season — the most in a season since it joined the competition in 2011.
