colacdistrictWeekly Times | UNDEFEATED South Colac and Birregurra are sitting pretty at the top of the table ahead of this week’s Round 6 clash in the Colac and District Football League.

With South Colac’s Ben Cox (right) and Birregurra’s Christian Kelly — the league’s two leading goalkickers with 30 and 27 majors respectively — at either end of the ground, defenders will have their hands full on Saturday.

However, the coaches of both sides brushed off the idea of a shootout between the two.

“Both sides play a pretty attacking style of football but at the same time the backlines are very experienced and structured,” South Colac coach Tim Foley said.

“I don’t know if it’s going to be a shootout, but Ben and Christian are good friends so they’ll be eager to kick a few more than each other.”

The versatility of South Colac’s scoring options has been bolstered with Todd Baudinette, Joel Menzies and David Marendaz all spending time up forward.

Foley’s Kangaroos lead the competition for points scored (765) and it was an asset Birregurra coach Ben Boseley was all too aware of.

“There will be plans put in place and match-ups accordingly, but if you look at South Colac they’ve got a plethora of players who can go forward,” Boseley said.

“There’s more than just one name we’ll be concerned about.”

South Colac and Birregurra are already two games clear of third-placed Alvie on the ladder and both have defeated last year’s grand finalists, Simpson and Irrewarra-Beeac.

Birregurra’s 102-point Round 4 victory over reigning premier Simpson, as well as wins at home against Irrewarra-Beeac and Colac Imperials, have highlighted the Saints’ season and Boseley said there was a lot of belief among the playing group.

“We take a lot of confidence out of those three games,” Boseley said.

“We’ve played Lorne down at Lorne and Apollo Bay at Apollo Bay, so we’ll take confidence down to South Colac and we look forward to the challenge”.

The Kangaroos are coming off consecutive wins against last year’s grand finalists. Foley said his team was ready to take the next step in finals after three consecutive preliminary final defeats, but getting past Birregurra “will be a challenge”.
