Weekly Times | THE Kyabram District league kicked off on the weekend with some lopsided opening round scores.
Round 1 nail-biters included Stanhope’s two-point triumph over Avenel, while Girgarre held off a fast-finishing Tallygaroopna by 10 points. On the other end of the spectrum, Rushworth endured a rough start going down by 160 points to Ardmona.
The game was originally scheduled to be played at Ardmona, but due to a break-in at Ardmona’s club headquarters it was moved to Rushworth.
It has been a taxing few weeks for Rushworth, with the club forced to forfeit its reserves fixture against Ardmona, citing a lack of players.
This followed the club’s announcement that it would not field an under-18s side this season, a revelation league president Wayne Ryan said he was “concerned” about.
Rushworth president Stephen Kealy said speculation surrounding the club’s numbers had resulted in many players moving on.
But he hoped the club would be able to put a reserves side on the park in the coming weeks.
“Tough day but, to all the doomsayers we got on the track and should get Reserves up by next week! Ardy (Ardmona) were far too good but better to come,” the club tweeted on Saturday.
