wandellaWeekly Times | WANDELLA has made it a 2-0 start to the Golden Rivers Football League season with a 32-point win against Wakool yesterday.

The Bombers won the rematch of last year’s semi-final, 15.5 (95) to 9.9 (63).

It followed their thrilling victory last week against Murrabit, which saw Wandella win by five-points courtesy of the last goal of the game after trailing all day.

At three-quarter time yesterday new Wandella coach Peter Morris, a 200-senior game player for the Bombers who returned after a three-year absence, put it on the side to not let the opportunity slip.

Wakool whittled a half-time deficit of 26 points down to eight points by the last change.

Bendigo Pioneers squad member Gavin Cathie promptly booted two last quarter goals for Wandella to take his tally to five for the match.

Ruckman Brodey Farley kicked the next two goals to secure the result, and with a total of three goals was among the Bombers’ best players with Cathie, Peter Moore, Tim and Troy Robinson.

Wakool’s only goal for the term came after the siren, and David Hutchinson, who kicked eight goals last week in the Hawks’ 80-point win against Moulamein, was kept to two yesterday.

Morris said he wanted to see more wins with contested football in the midfield after last week’s match.

“We’re pretty happy with how we’re going. There were a few lapses in the game but hopefully we can eradicate that in the next few weeks,” Morris said.

Morris said he was disappointed by the Bombers’ lack of effort in the third term.

“We pride ourselves on being a pretty hard side and a hard running side and I think we just stopped in that third quarter,” Morris said.

“It was good that the boys responded in the last quarter and we went back to the way we wanted to play.”

Wakool’s standouts were Conlan Gunn, Daren Turner, David Grose, Reagan Hamilton, Bronson Wheatley and coach Lachlan Gleeson.
