Weekly Times | PROLIFIC forward Grant Weeks is back at his home club Colbinabbin in the Heathcote District Football League as the Grasshoppers prepare to celebrate their centenary.
Also returning from Goulburn Valley Football League club Rochester with Weeks was Tom Hill, while midfielder Sam Vale made the same switch in anticipation of the 2014 season — originally believed to be the centenary year.
The tiny town is expected to fill to bursting for the official centenary celebrations on the Queen’s Birthday weekend, when Colbinabbin plays Elmore on June 6.
The last time Weeks donned the Grasshoppers’ green and gold was in the 2009 Heathcote and District grand final when he kicked six goals in a losing game.
The 26-year-old, who works on the family farm in Colbinabbin, has only missed the ton once since from three seasons with Golden Square in the Bendigo league and two with Rochester.
Colbinabbin has won two of its three games this season, defeating Mt Pleasant on Saturday night by 11 points. Weeks has booted 16 goals, including 10 in the first game against White Hills.
“I’m happy I made the decision to come home and I think it would’ve been a year I regretted,” Weeks said.
“I would’ve loved to stay at Rochy and play good quality footy again, but it’s just the opportunity has arisen to play with all the mates I’ve grown up with and in a special year at the club.”
Tom Hill, 26, played one season with Rochester, but has reunited with his brothers Luke, Tim and Seth.
Should their youngest brother, Daniel, line up it would be the first time the brothers have played senior football together.
Vale, 25, is a new recruit after suffering a season-ending knee injury early last year.
“I don’t think there’s anyone that’s playing footy who’s from Colbo that isn’t playing there this year,” Vale said.
Colbinabbin’s centenary celebrations include a display of memorabilia in the town hall on Friday, June 5, from 5pm, the match against Elmore, the gala ball on Saturday, June 6, and a barbecue lunch at the hall on Sunday, June 7.
A book of the club’s history, For the Grand Old Green and Gold, will also be launched.
Ticket sales for the ball close on Monday, May 4. For information and purchases contact Andrew McTaggart on 0438 048 395 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
