humeWeekly Times | THERE is never a good time to get sick, but Walla Walla president Jeremy Mott has just about the worst timing imaginable.

The Hume league stragglers broke a 25-match winless drought in Round 3 last month by defeating the Billabong Crows by 20 points. But Mott was unable to stay and revel in the Hoppers’ first win since Round 15, 2013 because he became ill as the final whistle approached.

Mott said he did not want to leave the match, but suspected he had contracted a stomach bug at the most inopportune moment.

“I was disappointed I couldn’t stay and celebrate with everybody, but it’s nice to have that little monkey off our back,” he said.

Luckily for Mott, after a bye last weekend the Hoppers produced the goods again on Saturday to beat their rival Culcairn for what is believed to be the first time since 2007. Walla Walla won by 22 points, with playing coach Matthew Jaensch slotting eight goals.

Mott said he celebrated the second victory with extra gusto after missing the first.

Walla Walla will play top-of-the-table Murray Magpies this weekend.
