benflSOUTH Bendigo remained three games clear of fellow top three contenders Eaglehawk and Sandhurst following a hard-fought 23-point victory over the Dragons 10 years ago.

It was Rd. 13 of the 2006 season and although the Hawks notched their eighth win of the year with a massive 10-goal demolition of Golden Square they were still three, clear games and 17 per cent behind the Bloods.
In other Rd. 13 clashes veteran Kyneton forward Wayne Eve drilled 11 goals against the hapless North City while ladder leader Gisborne restricted Maryborough to five goals en route to a mammoth 133-point rout of the Magpies.
The Magpies had just 3.0 (18) on the scoreboard by three-quarter time. Matt ‘Knocker’ Knox speared home nine goals for the Graveyard Dogs, earning praise from playing coach Marcus Barham.
Knox had been in and out of the senior Gissy line-up quite a bit in 2006.
Square coach Darren Walsh was a dejected figure at match-end at Canterbury Park. “We had a few guys out, that’s true, but Eaglehawk outpointed us from the start.
“With the guys we had out I decided to give a few blokes a chance to put their hands up to become regular senior players heading into the finals.”
But without naming names Walsh gave the Advertiser the impression he was less than impressed with a few of the ‘ins’.
“The positive thing this Eaglehawk game has given me is that I now have a better idea of which players are capable of standing up under pressure when it comes to the big games.”

THE dream of playing finals was still dangling in front of Castlemaine after the sixth-placed Magpies won a high-scoring shootout over Kangaroo Flat at the Camp Reserve.
Forty-four goals were scored with Jarryd Wiegard (KF) and David Taylor banging home six goals apiece for the rival clubs.
But Maine key defender Clint Aldridge restricted Roos’ playing coach Damien Brown to just a single goal earning high praise from Magpie coach Ian Martin.

Derrick Filo celebrated his 400th game as the Two Blues belted the Square by 61 points.
Dekka ran through a guard of honour before the big game, carrying his 17-month-old son Isaiah.
Running alongside his Dad was then 16-year-old Brodie Filo who went on to win the 2015 Michelsen Medal with the BFNL's Borough.
He's now playing in the strong Goulburn Valley Footy League.

NETBALL was flourishing ten years back with four grades contested.
North City registered a 47—36 A Grade win over the Tigers at the Kyneton Showgrounds with Leesa Gab the Northies best. Katie Harris and Jamie Madden were the top contributors for Kyneton. The Tigers remained winless and anchored to the bottom of the A grade ladder.
Sandhurst stayed two, premiership points ahead of Golden Square at the top of the A grade ladder after a comprehensive 53—30 win over South Bendigo at the QEO court.
With goal defence player Alisha Chadwick and shooters Andy Heenan (GS) and Jemma Clarkson (GA) in top touch Maryborough downed Gisborne: 56—43.
Wing attack Shelley Barclay and goal defence player Sarah Lawless were best for Gisborne.
Results of other matches: third-placed Kangaroo Flat 57 def. Castlemaine 28. Best for the Roos: Yasmin Thomas (WD) and Lauren Cowling (centre) and for the Maine: Kirby Jefferies (WD) and Lauren Clarke (GK).
Golden Square def. Eaglehawk 43—30. No best players listed in the Monday Addy’s round-up of matches played.

AROUND the traps and reigning Bridgewater premiership coach Andrew Collins booted a goal and was in the Bendigo Pioneers best although the Pios went down to the Dandenong Stingrays.
The Pioneers booted five goals to two in the final quarter of the QEO clash with Brenton Hall leading the way with three.
Dandenong 13.13 (91) def. Bgo Pioneers 10.10 (70).
It was top versus bottom in the HDFL with Elmore dishing out an 87-point belting to cellar dweller Huntly.
Things look a lot different a decade on in the HDFL. Reigning premiers North Bendigo were second from the bottom with just 12 premiership points and copped a 105-point belting from Colbinabbin.
North managed just five goals for a day’s work while the Grasshoppers pinged home 18.
In the Top Three battle between Mt. Pleasant and Lockington Bamawm United Mounts won by 31 points while an accurate Heathcote (fourth) scrambled home by a solitary point over White Hills (seventh): 16.6 (102) to14.17 (101).
Harcourt, Rovers, Newstead, Carisbrook and Royal Park made up the Top Five in the MCDFL with Maldon still in the hunt --- only a game behind fifth-placed Royal Park but with a better percentage.
By 19 per cent which gave Maldon a good sniff heading into August.

REPORTING about Bridgewater earlier in the round-up and the current day mighty Mean Machine were two from the LVFL cellar a decade ago. Yes, they were in seventh position.

Of course Andy Collins was yet to make his re-appearance with his home club, but still Bridgie beat second last Marong 12.15 (87) to 11.7 (73).
Kurt Ashman booted seven goals for the Red and Whites while sixth-placed Mitiamo caused a major upset downing YCW (2nd) by nine points: 13.10 to 12.7.
Top team Pyramid Hill downed Calivil United (3rd) by a comfortable 46 points: 15.15 (105) to 9.5 (59).

Newbridge almost blew its chances using the strong breeze in the third quarter with a clutch of bad kicking: 5.8 to the Bears’ 1.1. But the Maroons held on in a close one: 10.18 (78) to Bears Lagoon-Serpentine 11.3 (69).

Richard’s tips for Rd. 13: Eaglehawk by 11, Kyneton by 5, Golden Square by 39, Sandhurst by 37 and Strath Storm by 91.
Current tipping total for 2016: 50.
