At last. Seymour’s A-grade netball side has threatened, but finally achieved its first win this season with a heart-stopping see-sawing victory over Mooroopna on Saturday.
The 36-35 win was almost a tale of four quarters. Yet another fast start by the Lions saw the side out to a 14-7 lead at the first break and the advantage touched 10 goals soon after. But then the Cats fought back, and appeared to have all the momentum heading into the final change, when up 29-27.
But Seymour wasn’t finished yet and showed plenty of heart to get back in front. The cheers when the final whistle blew sounded like a grand final had just been won.
Young shooter Millie Brock again stood out under a lot of pressure, being the side’s best a second week in a row. Her partner in the circle Ellie O’Sullivan shot well in the first and last quarters, while centre Sarah Douglas also stood out.
A happy coach Ash Chapman said it was a team performance.
‘‘They were hard at the ball and penetrated down the court,’’ he said.
‘‘We dropped away a little bit through the middle of the game but we played well when it counted. Right across the court we got good intercepts at crucial times which kept us in the game.
‘‘The most positive sign was that when we got a couple of goals down we didn’t give up.’’
And like most Lions’ football and netball teams that took the court on Saturday, there was a lot of emotion surrounding the death of Eamonn O’Connor.
‘‘It’s really great they could get a win after that,’’ Chapman said.
It doesn’t get any easier for Seymour this week, with the Lions to take on a star-studded Kyabram at home. Most notably it will be the first time 2011 Wellman Medallist Kathryn Hard returns to Seymour since joining the Bombers before the start of this season.B-GRADE
A big third-quarter surge wasn’t quite enough to get the Lions back in this game, eventually going down 51-43.
It looked like it might be worse earlier, but Seymour staged a stirring third-term effort to be just two goals down at the final break.
However, Mooroopna settled the issue early in the fourth quarter, scoring five quick goals to put the result beyond doubt.
Coach Cathy McInerney said the Cats came to play.
‘‘They had 100 per cent determination and beat us in all areas of the court,’’ she said.
‘‘They were just harder at the ball, consistent and didn’t miss the goals. We’ve just been playing inconsistent netball and just can’t find our drive.’’
Standouts for the Lions were defenders Rachel Mundy and Liz Fuhrmeister, as well as midcourter Andrea McKenzie.B-RESERVE
Despite being on the wrong end of a 61-25 scoreline, coach Tegan Hansen was happy with the way her side went.
‘‘It was actually really good to watch the girls put into practice lots of stuff we’ve done in training,’’ she said.
‘‘We’ve been working on finding our space so play flows a lot better. Their endeavour was there again but they just came up against a team that was a little bit better. Their shooters were very accurate.’’
Natalia Morgan, Sophie Gregson and Emily Martin were the Lions’ best.
Hansen said her side still needed to work on its shooting but she was hopeful of some wins soon, after enduring a tough stretch against most of the better sides.UNDER-17
The under-17s got back on the winners list with a 43-33 win that was tougher than the score suggests.
Seymour got out to a 13-6 lead at the first break but saw a Cats side better than its table position suggests come back to narrow the margin to just two at the final change.
However the young Lions steadied and did the damage in the final term.
Coach Abby Misiti said her charges fell away in the middle of the game.
‘‘(The Cats) were very physical and vocal from the sideline which put the girls off a little bit,’’ she said.
‘‘We made a lot of errors under pressure which is something we need to look at. But to win the final quarter by eight showed their character.’’
Seymour had just one bench player, and standouts were Aimee Miller-Grant, a midcourter who previously played at Avenel. She played several positions against Mooroopna, and excelled.
Shooters Rosie and Alice O’Sullivan continued their excellent form as well.
‘‘Our shooters never let us down,’’ Misiti said.
‘‘They’re part of the reason we get over the line a lot of the time.’’
The Lions now face a stern test against unbeaten Kyabram at Kings Park on Saturday.
‘‘They have been winning by massive margins and got some girls in interleague as well, so they’ll be extremely strong,’’ Misiti said.
