Weekly Times | IT WASN’T so much ducks to water as sharks to mud on Saturday.
The “Shark Shuffle” made its first appearance in the Warrnambool and District Football League season on Saturday, when both Deakin University’s seniors and reserves sides securing their first wins of the year.
The Sharks’ seniors defeated East Warrnambool by three goals, 13.13 (91) to 10.13 (73), backing up the reserves’ 41-point win earlier in the day.
There is only one home-and-away round remaining in the league.
Club veteran and committee member Luke Jackson, who played in the reserves’ win, said everyone was “happy and relieved at the same time”.
“We’ve been waiting a while for it so it was nice to get it in the second last game of the year,” he said.
The Sharks’ traditional celebration was jubilantly observed, with the players diving through the mud in the centre square, waving their “fins”.
“The old turf wicket was nice and messy so we had to make the most of it,” Jackson said.
Hill End (Mid Gippsland league), Yarroweyah (Picola and District North West division), and Kilmore (Riddell District) also ended their season ducks on the weekend.
