Symthesdale FCWeekly Times | SMYTHESDALE has recorded a small victory for its players and supporters, even if it did not equate to four points on the ladder.

The club, which made national headlines when thrashed by 429 points by Gordon last month, kicked 5.1 (31) to Buninyong’s 41.23 (269) in their Central Highlands league match on Saturday.

The score, including three goals in the opening term, was the best Smythesdale has registered since the club’s rebranding from Illabarook after the 2013 season.

Buninyong kicked away after leading at quarter-time by five goals, booting 19 goals in the final term alone.

“Up until three-quarter time was very, very good. We actually got the jump and kicked three goals before they scored and we just seemed to be doing a lot of things right,” Smythesdale president Nick Gray said.

“The pressure we kept on them in the first half was really good but in the end I think our fitness let us down. The determination was still there but the fitness wasn’t.”

Gray said talks with their juniors to keep them at the club next year continued, as did sponsorship discussions with two businesses.

One of the businesses approached the club after the infamous Gordon match.
